Nominations open for Wales Blog Awards 2011

It’s back! The 2011 Wales Blog Awards are open for nominations so you can search through your email, web browser history and twitter feed and find the best blogs in Wales.

We want to see your nominations, via our entry form, for the best blogs around.

New for 2011 are four new categories. The biggest one is a People’s Choice Award – which every blog entered will go into and a giant public vote will ensue to decide the winner.

The other new categories will shine a light on the best photography, food and drink and entertainments/music blogs.

The Best Blog category will be decided by the judges out of each category winner.

You can either nominate a blog you read or one you writer yourself. There’s full guidelines here on the nomination process and also take a look at the criteria to see what the judges will be looking for.

The timescale for the awards will see nominations close on Thursday 1st September at 12 NOON. A longlist of all the blogs entered for each category (with their web address) will be published shortly after.

These blogs are then judged against the criteria by a team of judges and whittled down to a shortlist. These are then sent to category specific judges and winners and runner-ups are picked.

Once that’s done we all get together in October for a party and the winners are announced. You can read about last year’s winner of the Best Blog in Wales here – the lovely Ruthie Davies.

You can follow all the action on Twitter with @walesblogawards

Best of luck, and get nominating!

What makes a good blog?

We’re putting together plans for the Wales Blog Awards 2011 (more details soon!) and we’re working on the criteria of what makes a good blog.

I wrote a post during last year’s competitiong about what the judges were looking for, and below is a list I’ve currently got of the criteria.

Take a look and I’d be interested to know in the comments about what you feel makes a good blog. Thanks to gavomatic57 and amydavies for their ideas via Twitter so far.

- Offering something unique and someone who knows their subject
- Able to write in an engaging and entertaining style
- Links out to other blog posts and websites
- Includes good strong photos, and attributes where they come from
- Good use of social media with their blog e.g. Twitter feed, Facebook page
- Post frequency matches the style of blog e.g. some may be quick-fire, photo and paragraph while others may be long-form blog posts
- Active in the comments, replying back to readers and getting into debates
- Good spelling, punctuation and grammar
- Looks good, thought has gone into the way the blog looks to make it easy for people to read and accessible to all
- Clear about and contact page

What do you think? What makes a good blog?

The Shortlist

After much deliberation the shortlist for the Wales Blog Awards 2010 has been decided. Below are the shortlisted blogs for the different categories. The standard was very high and it was hard whittling it down to just a few entries who will compete for the prize in each section.

You can find out more about how we shortlisted in this post and the criteria used.

Shortlisted bloggers will be invited to the awards night at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff on Thursday 14th October and some general tickets made available, for free, depending on numbers. We’ll post more details about the awards night on the site soon.

Shortlisting: Uncovering the blogging talent in Wales

This afternoon the judges sorted through all the entries in the Wales Blog Awards longlist and it was tough going. Loads of great blogs to read and it made us all realise just how much great blogging talent there is in the nation.

Across all categories it was tough narrowing it down to just a few blogs who will battle it out to win their category. What struck us as well was just how much linking out there is and linking up between the blogs. One of the things we hope will come out of the Blog Awards is those blogrolls down the right-hand side filling up with more people discovering and linking to new reads they’ve found.

We also discovered how blogs can make a big difference to their community, posting local information – but at the other end of the spectrum they can be used to tell a very personal journey that takes you aback at just how honest and open that person has been.

So, what were we looking for when trying to narrow down the lists? Content is king on the web and we wanted to see it. Plenty of posts, on informative topics and some relevant pictures. We wanted to see linking out, the web is a social place and those who linked out to other websites and blogs and built upon this in their content certainly ticked some boxes.

Lots of blogs were embracing twitter, facebook, flickr and youtube as a way of promoting their content. We saw a lot more video than expected, and lots of people using Twitter and plugging it in to the side of their blog. Great to see.

Basic things like a good grasp of spelling, punctuation and grammar were needed, plus attribution for images. We also wanted to see a clear about page for the blog so the reader had a good idea of where the writer was coming from. We kept an eye on comments and reader interaction as well, it’s always great to see bloggers responding to questions/criticisms in the comments on their posts.

Overall the standard was very high and when you see the shortlist you’ll be impressed at the quality of Welsh bloggers out there.

What happens now? Each shortlist will go to the specialist judge for the category and a winner and runner-up will be picked. We’ll publish the shortlist next week and let everyone who is shortlisted know. We’ll also release details of the awards shin-dig next month.

Thanks again to everyone who nominated their favourite blogs or themselves and we hope you’ll enjoy browsing the shortlist and then finding out who came out on top.
